'Ma ke Haath ka Khana' - the Battle between Taste Buds and Heart!

Is it Indian Mothers correlating Love with Food aka 'Ma ke Haath ke Khana' or it is that Indian kids get confused between their hearts and tongue or is it both ways😕

Most people (specially and specifically Indians) when asked what is their favorite dish/cuisine/food, reply with a typical answer 'Ma ke haath ka khana' and I find it annoyingly boring, I mean seriously are you trying to tell me that your 'Ma ke Haath ka Khana' is better than restaurant food prepared by awesome chefs who are super qualified in culinary arts🙄

Growing up I never really felt that the food cooked by my mom was something special, it was the daily basic comfort food, there was nothing that I disliked about it but I didn't go gaga over it either. Special meals were always the once we had at restaurants.

Post her retirement she kind of got more creative in the kitchen but my opinion didn't really change, she still isn't my favorite cook.

But what I realized was her source of creativity in the kitchen was me. I was in this 'I love momos' phase and she decided to start making momos at home because having outside food all the time wasn't good for my health, and many such small experiments continued in the kitchen depending on my likes.

And then came the quarantine /lockdown period of our lives and she kept making stuff from chole bhature to ice cream to smoothies to keep my taste buds happy.

Well now I get it, I don't think she loves cooking or she is a great cook but when you have motivation as strong as making your kid happy, it makes you go out of your comfort zone and do amazing things.

If love was an ingredient that made food taste better I would say mere 'Ma ke haath ka khana' is the best but my tongue knows better, I rather take my mom (with all her love for me along) to my favorite restaurant/cafe and enjoy a yummy meal than claiming that my mom's cooked food is my favorite.

The best meal is with people you Love

It's very difficult for me to judge how good the food is only on basis of it's taste; it's the company that makes a great amount of difference. People I love put me in this state of perpetual happy high, I laugh on things that aren't really funny, smile a little more and be happy always when they are around. No food, desert or drink can do this for me. Having said that,  it's always fun exploring different restaurant and cafes with them but that's  just secondary I can have the same Insanely happy time in a waiting lounge of an airport. Happiness is a state of mind,  food can be a part of it but rarely the source of it.

A little bit of everything

A post work dinner at one of those "you can never go wrong with" kind of a place with you can never get bored kind of company. The time when Something as simple and basic roti, dal and butter chicken feels nothing less than ambrosia and something as simple as breathing makes you feel alive. An evening with Laughter, banter, giggling and yes the food; Sometimes it's just those small little things that give you unadulterated joy.
